Waters, August 13 Daily Reflection

What is it about water that makes us feel so refreshed.  My husband loves quoting Dave Letterman “I don’t believe there is a man, woman, or child on this earth who doesn’t enjoy a lovely beverage.” Something about water seems to soothe us, refresh and rejuvenate us.  Today was the last summer day at the pool for my children.  We have been going 2-3 times a week and they love it.  There is nothing boring about a pool.  I asked my son today what his favorite part is he said jumping in and swimming underwater.  If you have been outside on a hot, humid,  Louisville day the best thing you can do is get in a pool.  Maybe because our bodies are made up of water that’s why we are so attracted to it.

Whose breath is not taken away by the above picture or a seascape? Is there any adult alive who doesn’t feel better after they have taken a good shower?  Water can cleanse us and wash all the dirt away and make us feel clean and fresh.  Water when you hear it lapping against a dock or waves crashing against rocks can put your mind at ease.  Water has so many powerful uses to it.  How often have you given your little ones baths and they have so much fun in the water they don’t want to get out.  Water is used as a plaything also.  Have you ever poured water out infront of one of your children when he/she was a toddler and watched as his/her fat little hand tries to grasp it before it falls to the ground.  Although they never do anything but touch it and they fail to grasp it, they continue to try to catch it and hold it.  That’s somewhat like my faith I feel like I can touch it but I can’t always grasp it’s complete meaning yet I endlessly try to catch it and hold it within me.

The Samaritan Woman

Jesus answered and said to her  “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again;  but whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst; the water I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”  The woman said to him “Sir, give me this water, so that I may not be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw the water.”

John 4: 13- 15

The woman is like each of us thirsting for the fullfillment that water gives us.  To quench a thirst on a hot day, to sooth our minds , to refresh, renew and rejuvenate our weary bodies.  To enable  us to play and feel cooled by it’s very touch.  To cleanse us of our mistakes and dirt.  We are each thirsting and grasping trying to find that thing in life that will fulfill all those needs to quench it all.  Maybe the Living Water is God just maybe we have been looking in the wrong places instead of looking at the possessions of this world we need to seek true fulfillment by seeking God “but whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst”.

Next time you experience water, which will be sometime today because we cannot live without it,  think of  how your deepest thirst can truly be quenched.
