A Promise, May 3, 2017 Daily Reflection

“Do not use the word promise again. You have ruined the word for me! I don’t think you know what it means anymore.” I said this to a student who consistently promised to do his work. He lied through his teeth on at least four different occasions. I could not stand it anymore. He abused the word, the idea and the meaning behind the word promise. A promise – a declaration or assurance that one will do a particular thing or that a particular thing will happen. That is the definition of the word. If he could understand the importance and value of the word I think he would stop using it so loosely.

What does a promise mean to you? I hope that you take your promises seriously and only give them out when you have something to back them up. I am cautious with what I promise to others. When a promise is broken, trust is broken as well.

God promises us eternal life in heaven with him. He promises that if we follow his ways he will take care of our every need.
“So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
– Matthew 6:31-33
God doesn’t make promises he cannot keep. You can trust in the promise of God! In your own life consider the power and influence of a promise and never declare one without thought or good intent.
