“Now this is the message that we have heard from him and proclaim to you:

God is light, and in him there is no darkness at all.”

First John 1:5

We all have an inner hunger and longing for the light. Consider the way our mentality changes when the sun shines and the skies are bright blue. On those days when it is bright out we seem to have a cheery disposition. Perhaps, it is because we long for the light. Many of us fear the darkness. Although some use the darkness to blanket and hide our sins and misgivings. We hide in the dark or from the dark but we bask in the light.

“God is light, and in him there is no darkness at all.” In the story of creation after the first sin occurred the man attempted to hide from God, when once he walked with him in the garden. The darkness came with sin. God has no sin. God has only goodness. Our souls long for the goodness and for God. It is harmful to cut ourselves off from our creator. When we feel disconnected and distant from all does it correspond to those times when we have fell away from God; prayed less, stopped reading scriptures, attended Church less?

Our souls long to rest in the light of God. Our hearts are complete in God’s eternal love. Why do we believe that our free will means we need to cut out our creator and do this entire journey alone? God gave us free will to love freely but relinquishing God’s light is not only painful but crushing to our souls. WE NEED THE LIGHT. We need to turn away from the darkness and embrace the light.

Today, consider how you can turn towards the light of God to complete who you were created to be, fully human with the purpose to love.
