Today, I will be teaching my students about sacramental awareness. It is a fancy term for the presence of God in our every day life. Sacrament is the visible sign of God on earth. It’s like God’s body language. Most people automatically think of the Sacraments of the Catholic Church; Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, and Marriage. It is true God is there in each one of those sacraments. We, as humans, are able to encounter God in these experiences in both a physical and spiritual sense. However, what many people overlook is the presence of God in our every day lives. God is not nature. God created nature. There are traces of God’s presence in everything he created from humanity to the environment, from actions of love, to miracles, to mysteries. God reveals himself in the people we love, in the talents we were graced with from our youth, in the passion and energy we have that gives life to others hopes and dreams.

I witness God’s presence in my children’s laughter, in my students smiles, in my coworkers kind words, in the scriptures powerful message, in my Dad’s support, in my ability to write about my faith, in the time I take to run daily. We become complacent in life and forget to seek God’s presence, but it is everywhere. Sacramental awareness is being aware of God’s presence in our every day lives. Where do you feel the presence of God in your life?
